Outstanding electric and acoustic instrumental music from four of the UK’s finest and most exciting players

With collective improvisation at the heart of their approach, the Works mix lyrical melodic soundscapes and exhilarating soloing with killer grooves.

“…and rather than an endless stream of solos, the emphasis is put on the compositions…exhilarating, inspired sounds. A must.” Time Out

"... striking and mysterious... the music is warm and the musicianship is superlative." Ian Carr

Inspired by the great instrumental bands of the early 70s, Patrick Wood’s compositions combine jazz, world music, rock, folk and roots influences in a way that is both accessible and sophisticated. His collaborators are three of the most accomplished and interesting players in the country:

Mark Lockheart (“an improviser of real character”, The Guardian; “ a consummate saxophonist", the Rough Guide to Jazz ) has remained prominent here and internationally since his work in the groundbreaking big band Loose Tubes with the Works’ exceptional drummer Nic France.

Between them and top bassist Neville Malcolm, the breadth and quality of their work is exceptional. They have toured internationally and recorded with a highly impressive array of artists working in different genres:

Incognito, Terry Callier, Kenny Wheeler, Us 3, Django Bates, Andy Sheppard and Billy Cobham

The Orlando Consort, Nigel Kennedy, June Tabor, Robert Wyatt, L. Shankar

Bill Withers, Gabrielle, Annie Lennox, Radiohead, David Gilmour and many more.

The Works' debut album has just been released. 'Beware of the Dog' is a varied collection of instrumental music ranging from fiery groove-based improvising to pastoral acoustic lyricism, while taking in African, Latin and Soul/Funk sounds along the way.

The band is joined by a very special guest on the album, the wonderful guitarist Tony Remy. Tony regularly works with some of the biggest stars in the world, effortlessly spanning different styles in jazz, rock and RnB, yet always retaining his unique voice.

“His relentless invention, soulful touch and incredible energy have gained him worldwide recognition and respect” Chris Parker, The Times.

“One of the world’s most exciting guitar players” Jazzwise Magazine.
